Approximately the first half of the ledger, covering 1839-1840, was maintained by a businessman whose identity is unclear, but was likely James Dunham Carhart, an older relative of Elijah Carhart. Items listed are perishable goods, including coffee, tea, tobacco, and liquor, named along with prices, clients and locations that include Macon, Savannah, and New York.

The shop book contains accounts for customers (probably in DeKalb County, Georgia). It lists the customer name, date, cost, and services (such as sharpening a plow or repairing a wagon wheel or garden hoe). The accounts for 1884-1885 concern cotton sales. Also included are a few recipes from newspapers and an 1898 church program for the Mill District Sunday School Association Clifton Church. There are modern day notebook pages taped over some pages in the book. On these are handwritten transcripts of letters from an unidentified father to his son in Savannah, Georgia regarding the sale of enslaved people on a plantation.

A letter of three full pages, written to Solon Z. Ruff's brother, Joseph H. Ruff. The letter is dated 7 April 1860, and it describes Marietta, its prospects on the eve of war, and the military organization of the town's young men, of which he was named captain. In describing the prospects for the town, he notes, "There are several houses in Atlanta that sell for very small profits for the cash and the consequence is the people from here whenever they had any money, run down there and do their trading. This has carried off the best part of the trade from Marietta and ruined some of our merchants."

The letters discuss shipments, payments, and remittance of goods traded around Georgia and Savannah in particular. In addition a few letters to plantations mention enslaved people.

The collection consists of diaries of Carlton Hillyer for 1859, 1861-1865, 1892-1895. The 1859 diary was kept by Hillyer while a student at the Union Academy (Washington, D.C.) and while the entries mainly document Hillyer's activities and lessons at school, he also discusses current events including the war in Europe, tensions in Mexico, local news of politics and court trials, and agriculture. The 1861-1865 diary contains writings of Hillyer including essays, poems, and translations of other's works. The 1892-1895 journal contains notes, probably used for newspapers columns, and clippings from the Augusta Chronicle of columns written by Issacher Marx.
